I am an engineer, a researcher, a scientist. A physician who advocates the scientific method, an intellectual. I have done active research in ten fields of engineering. It has been recognized at the global level and yet I am famous worldwide as ‘ Rudraksh Baba’. Many people may find this contradictory, but it is not so. Rudraksh Baba is famous only because of the pure confluence of knowledge and wisdom, spirituality and science. Let us take the example of Rudraksh, which has gained great importance these days on the path of spirituality and science. Today, people come to me for that Rudraksh, but how did I reach that Rudraksh?
I got a job in a spinning mill in Nepal. My client was a wealthy businessman in Nepal. During that time, I had been to Nepal 26 times in two years! My ticket was booked at Mumbai airport. I used to fly to Kathmandu by 5 pm flight. The next day I would work on the site. I would go to the businessman’s house for dinner. I would chat with his mother at home. While talking, one day I told her that I had done the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. She sighed heavily and said, ‘Son! I also wanted to see Kailash. But…” She took another deep breath. After a while she said, ‘Will you tell me about this trip?’
I told her the detailed description of the Kailash Yatra. She was very happy. I left to return to Nashik. I greeted her. Then she said, ‘Son, lord Shiva’s grace is upon you, I will give you Rudraksha plants in the form of lors Shiva’s Prasad as a blessing! I did not know much about Rudraksha plants. But I was very happy to receive eleven Rudraksha plants as a blessing, the symbol of the Lord. I came to Kathmandu airport with those eleven plants, each one foot long. Then a different drama started there. The airport officials were stuck because they were not allowed to take the plants out! Our client was rich and well-known in Nepal. When I told them on the phone, they talked to the airport officials and got me permission to take the plants, but on one condition. These plants cannot be kept in the plane! What do you mean? I was confused! What do you mean they cannot be kept in the plane? So why should I keep them on the plane? There was another argument. Finally, I sat down with those plants on my lap. I brought those eleven plants from Kathmandu to Mumbai, cherishing them like a little child. This was the solution and I reached Mumbai on the plane from Kathmandu, cherishing the parcel of those eleven plants like a little child! The Indian edition of Rudraksha plants started at the Mumbai airport!
The airport officials in Mumbai were not ready to let the plants out. They said that they would have to be kept in quarantine for fifteen days, to check whether any fungus or virus had entered through them. Then I left the ‘innocent’ form of Shankar and assumed the ‘Tandav’ form. Finally, the officials, annoyed by seeing the Tandav, said, ‘Oh Baba, go away.’ From the Tandav form, I came into the gentle form. We reached Nashik. But I did not know what to do with these plants.
I didn’t know anything about trees, and these were Rudraksha plants! How and where to plant them in this strange soil, in a foreign land, in a foreign environment? I didn’t understand that. Finally, as ignorance is bliss, I told my aunt, “Mavshi, plant these plants!” She is also experts in this field ! She planted about four plants in the fifteen feet between my office and my house. Then planted the fifth a little further away. Still, there were six plants left! Then I gave them to my in-laws in Satana, Umbarkhed, Chalisgaon and Nagar and gave two plants to Nashik (All places are in Maharashtra). But not a single plant out of the six plants I gave them, survived! However, all the five plants planted by our aunt with naive devotion survived! It has been 25 years now. No fertilizer or medicine was added to those trees. They were only watered regularly. Now all these five big Rudraksha trees are now casting a spiritual and healthy shadow over our lives! As that Mataji of Kathmandu had said, it was because of the true ‘lord Shiva’s grace’ that ‘lord Shiva’s Prasad’ became sacred to me. I believe that all the merit I earned during the Kailash-Manas Yatra and then for eight-ten years, I guided that knowledge to other needy devotees for free, which made this possible!
Now many people come to see these five big Rudraksha trees in the courtyard of our bungalow. Sages, saints, monks, curious people, scholars, environmentalists, researchers, devotees come. Hundreds of people have different experiences at hundreds of levels. We are satisfied that ‘Shivji Ka Prasad’ is being useful to the people and the society!
Moving forward, the researcher in me started researching these trees. I was able to do research in the field of pharmaceutical engineering. Trees usually grow up to 50 to 70 feet. The trunk is up to one meter wide. The leaves are like mango leaves. Initially, the leaves are light green. Later, they turn dark green and then yellow-red and become coffee-colored during leaf fall. Usually, in the months of November-December, clusters of white flowers start appearing on the tree. A light fragrance permeates the atmosphere at night. After exactly a month, the fruits started appearing. The tree bore fruit for the first time in the sixth year after planting. In the first year, twenty-one fruits were counted. We did not know anything about what to do with this fruit. The fruit was green and like a sambora. When the fruit ripened, it turned blue-purple. The ripe Rudraksha started falling on the ground. When the outer shell and the seed of the fruit were removed, the hard seed/bead inside was found. Sharmishtha and our aunt have been doing this work regularly for many years with a vow-like attitude. The number of lines and grooves visible on the Rudraksha is the number of Mukhis. There are Rudrakshas from one Mukhi to 21 Mukhis. The spiritual greatness of Rudraksha is described in all the Puranas. But I have studied them more from the aspect of botany and pharmaceutical engineering. Since real Rudraksha is heavy, it sinks in water and this is a test of its authenticity. But some Rudrakshas are gnawed by birds, half eaten or dried by the sun or half-ripe, such Rudrakshas do not ripen completely. Therefore, they do not have the true qualities of Rudraksha. Such half-ripe Rudrakshas are called Bhadraksha. The main quality of Rudraksha is that it makes us fearless. Energy measuring Yatras report that Rudraksha has a kind of electrical power and sound. Wearing Rudraksha is a shield to protect us from various energy radio waves that are everywhere in the environment around us today. Rudraksha beads are also used in micro accupressure treatment techniques. They are used for blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, memory. Rudraksha is also useful for hair growth, beauty and removing wrinkles.
Once I broke a Rudraksha to do an experiment. I planted the flat seed like an apple inside in the ground. I studied various books. But I was not successful. I took the guidance of Dr. Shri Surya Gunjal, an agricultural researcher at the Open University in Nashik. I prepared 83 cuttings. The cuttings took roots. Twenty-two of them survived. Seven of the plants were taken to Chennai. They were planted there. But none survived. In the third year, after a thorough experiment, one plant survived. That tree is now twenty to twenty-five feet tall at Nerlikar Hospital, Gangapur Road, Nashik.
In the last twenty-five to thirty years, hundreds of people have visited Rudraksha trees. I have also given Rudraksha to thousands of people as gifts. I have never sold Rudraksha. I have not traded in the spirit of faith. Many sadhus and ascetics come. Saints and great men come. They go near the tree. They stop. They worship. They anoint us. They bless us abundantly on the way. One day, a saint from Junagadh came early in the morning. He went straight to the Rudraksha tree. He chanted mantras there and worshiped. After that, he came to our house and asked us for 11 Rudrakshas. After chanting mantras, he gave them back to us and asked us to keep them in the temple.
My Indian friend came to our house with his American wife. His wife was drawn to the Rudraksha tree by an unknown force. She stood under the tree, even after a long time, she was not ready to move from there! She was in a state of emotional trance. She could not even hear our calls and her whole body was shaking with unknown vibrations! After a while she said, I was not in this world..
Another such experience. An Indian woman from America came to us. She sat under a Rudraksha tree and meditated. When we asked her after one to one and a half hours, she said, ‘I was floating five to seven feet above the ground.’ There are many such amazing experiences.
So, I owe a lot of credit to Shiv Shankar Baba of Chennai for making me ‘Rudraksh Baba’. After the Kailash Manas Yatra started, I started getting to know the people in the group. In that group, Shiv Shankar Baba from Chennai, a Siddha Yogi man, had brought many disciples with him. Every evening, after reaching the camp, Shiv Shankar Baba would pray and perform havan with his followers. One of Baba’s disciples, Krishna, was an aeronautical engineer. Rameshbhai was an accountant. We also mingled with everyone. After the yatra ended, my bond with Shiv Shankar Ashram became stronger. Whenever I would get a call from the ashram, ‘I have remembered you’, I would immediately leave for Chennai. Shiv Shankar Baba was a very big person. He was a management consultant in the Madras Port Trust. He had a big business in transport. He was married. At a turning point in his life, full of children, he left everything and became a resident of the ashram in Kailaimbakkam, a village 38 kilometers from Chennai on the Pondicherry road. Baba had special love for both of us. He always said, ‘After all, you have to take care of everything, you both have to come here’. People consider him God. We consider him a friend and guide. Because of the rituals he gave, I have been doing Rudraksha service. Many people come. They go near the Rudraksha tree. They get various experiences. Some hear the sound of water flowing. Some feel the faint fragrance. Whenever I go out for any program or foreign trip, I always take Rudraksha with me. I give Prasad to the people of that place. Thousands of such Rudrakshas that I gave are in daily worship in many homes today. Those people remember us every day.
In 2005, I went to Bangalore for the Structural Engineers World Conference. Two thousand delegates were present. A Chinese speaker was bragging about the progress of wind energy research in his country. The president of the organization, Umesh Rao, stood up from the stage and told him that Avinash Shirode, who has built the world’s highest windmill in the field of wind energy, is present with us today! Everyone felt proud. I was welcomed with thunderous applause. I gave the Chinese researcher and a German speaker a Rudraksha memento, a garland made of Rudraksha.
After lunch, he asked for more Rudraksha. Eight days later, he sent an e-mail. He sent a photo of a garland made of one Rudraksha and one Gemstone. In December 2017, I went to Haifa, Israel. I also gave Rudraksha to the people whose houses I stayed there. That Mauli made earrings of three Rudraksha each and sent us that photo. This tree blooms once a year, but during 2007, I had a different experience. That is, as usual, the flowers started to bloom in November. Fruiting occurred in December-January. At that time, it bloomed again for the second time. While the fruits of the first spring were growing, the fruits of the second spring started to bloom. While those fruits were growing, the third spring of flowers came and its fruits started to grow. At the same time, the fruits of three springs were on the tree at some distance. Then, after the fruits of the first spring had completely fallen, the flowers of the fourth spring came again. On this, ABP Mazha television channel, which was the Alpha Marathi channel at that time, had made a documentary on the topic of global warming. Since these trees are abundant in the Himalayas, especially in Nepal, there are many such trees in Gorakhpur on the Nepal-India border. Many trees are found in Indonesia and the Philippines. There are many types of Rudraksha. Among them, Nepal Rudraksha is mostly completely round. This is the highest quality and we have the same trees. Rudraksha trees are very rare in Nashik and Maharashtra. And Rudraksha trees are not often seen anywhere else except in cold regions. But due to the grace and blessings of Bhole Shankar, we got those trees. We feel and believe that these trees were born due to the merit we received from the Kailash-Manas Yatra.
My interviews regarding Rudraksha have been aired on almost all TV channels. People naturally ask what do you do with so many Rudrakshas? People have houses full of jowar, millet, wheat. We have houses full of Rudrakshas. Because of all these articles and interviews, people come to us from far and wide looking for us. They take darshan of the Rudraksha tree. They worship it. This has become a regular thing. But sometimes it also bothers us. We have never said no to anyone. At any given time, as per the inspiration, we give five, seven, eleven, twenty-one or a handful of Rudrakshas. We fill the otti of the women who come with Rudraksha in our own way. We travel all over the world for scientific research and seminars. Wherever we go, we offer Rudraksha garlands, especially in the Shankar and Ganapati temples in India. We have offered such garlands in thousands of temples. Once I went to a Shri Krishna temple in a small village. I tried to offer Rudraksha there but the priest did not accept the Rudraksha. He said that Rudraksha is related to Shankar. Not to Vishnu. But on the contrary, when we went to Badrinath, we gave 21 Rudraksha to the priest there and told him that we had such an experience in the Krishna temple. Will you take Rudraksha? He said, don’t you know? Shankar worships Vishnu and Vishnu worships Shankar. All these differences are created by humans. So he took Rudraksha with great faith and placed it at the feet of God. We give Rudraksha as free prasad. Some people started taking advantage of it. Some simply ask for it as a right and get angry if we say no.
Once, the shooting of the film Guldasta was taking place in Khaire’s bungalow in our Vijay Nagar Colony. The main hero actor Makarand Anaspure, Jitendra Joshi, and Uday Tikekar had come. When I came to know about this, I called my friend’s daughter Pinky (Rajshree Landge). Because she also works in films and her film ‘Gadhvache Lagna’ with Makarand Anaspure is famous. I told Pinky, ‘Your hero has arrived, neighbor’. To this, she said, ‘Uncle, wait, Makarand is coming to your house in half an hour.’ In a short time, Makarand and Jitendra came home. I gave him Kairi’s panhe, but Makarand said no. Then he gave him Rudraksh. After that, he came home to chat every afternoon for four or five days. The next day, he asked for five rudraksha panhe again. The next day, he took them and after drinking, Makarand said, ‘Yesterday, I went to Shining and missed a good fives.’ When I heard that I was giving Rudraksha as a free gift, he said that free has no price and never give this precious thing for free! But I told him that if God gives so much, I don’t agree with taking money in return or selling Rudraksha! He gave me a good advice. He said that keep a box here. Seal it. Put a lock on it and write on it. Put as much money as you want in this box. The money collected in this will be useful for social work. People will give money of their own accord! But I didn’t agree with it in my mind. So I didn’t do anything like that. South Indians have more faith in Rudraksha than others. That is why I am known as Rudraksha Baba in South India. Thus, through the name Rudraksha Baba, Bhole Shankar unknowingly did the work of preserving Indian culture and the environment on my behalf. All this is due to the merit of my parents and the grace of the Lord!
If you look at it like that, these are just simple Rudraksha trees. But behind them lies our faith and immense hard work. Even today, when we sit under these Rudraksha trees on a hot summer afternoon, we feel a sense of satisfaction. Looking at these swaying trees, no emotion touches our mind. Only a pure sense of joy and peace comes to mind. Then at that time, I see the face of Bhole Shankar and the mother of that entrepreneur in Nepal smiling softly in the shade of these trees… With mother’s blessings, I was fortunate enough to do this service.
